Battery experts at Argonne National Laboratory give CBSNews.com their take on the future of energy storage. CBS News Alexander Trowbridge reports.

Lithium ion batteries currently dominate the electronics scene. Lithium ion batteries could be two or three times better than they are today. Possibilities in the future may differ from solid type batteries, and may include liquid solutions, or ambient conversion like picking up charges from the oxygen in the air.

Jeffrey Chamberlain, Department Directory of Development & Demonstraction for the Joint Center for Energy Storage Research is certain batteries will be smaller, faster charging, last longer, be safer, and cost less.

Joint Center for Energy Storage Research is located just outside of Chicago at Argonne National Laboratory, our partners include national leaders in science and engineering from academia, industry, and national laboratories. Their combined expertise spans the full range of the technology-development pipeline from basic research to prototype development to product engineering to market delivery.

Argonne National Laboratory is the first science and engineering research national laboratory in the United States, receiving this designation on July 1, 1946. Argonne National Laboratory initially was built to carry out Enrico Fermi’s work on nuclear reactors as part of the Manhattan Project, but today maintains a broad portfolio in basic science research, energy storage and renewable energy, environmental sustainability, and national security.
