CBS 2 Meteorologist Ed Curran recaps this morning’s rare moon eclipse, which was best viewed in Los Angeles.
Enjoy this collection of photos from the total lunar eclipse that occurred on January 31, 2018. The moon appears as a supermoon (the closest distance that the Moon reaches Earth in its elliptic orbit), with perigee being on January 30, 2018. The technical name is the perigee syzygy of the Earth–Moon–Sun system or more simply full (or new) Moon at perigee. This was a Full Moon perigee.
As it was also a blue moon — the name for the second full moon that occurs in a single month, it was referred to as the super blue blood moon. The Moon was known as a blood moon because of the red coloring during the process of the Earth’s umbra (shadow) covering the Moon and causing it to darken or redden. The first Full Moon in January 2018 was on January 1, 2018.
Of the possible 12-13 full or new Moons each year, 3-4 usually may be classed as a supermoon as commonly defined.
