A Greyhound bus en route from Milwaukee, Wisconsin to Chicago, Illinois was involved in a possible armed takeover by a passenger starting about 9:50 p.m. Friday, January 12, 2018. Illinois State Police and Lake County Sheriff’s Deputies (Illinois) were notified about 10:14 p.m. Friday of the pursuit involving multiple Wisconsin police agencies following the Greyhound bus southbound on I-94. The pursuit may have started in Racine County, and was continuing on southbound I-94 from Wisconsin into Illinois just after 10:15 p.m. Illinois police agencies were staging to await the arrival of the bus in Illinois along I-94.
Spike sticks were possibly deployed in Kenosha County and in Lake County on I-94. By 10:40 p.m. police were responding to a “possible hostage situation” with a passenger with a gun on the Greyhound bus Friday night while traveling on southbound I-94.
The bus crossed the Illinois-Wisconsin border and was stopped near I-94 at Rt. 173 near the town of Wadsworth, Illinois. Video of the Greyhound shows that the bus is stopped on the right shoulder and surround by several police vehicles, possibly just north of Route 173. Multiple police agencies have surrounded the bus with possibly 48 to 50 passengers onboard.
All lanes are blocked in both direction near the incident.
Possibly all passengers/hostages or most passengers/hostages were off the bus by 12:15 a.m. The offender was in custody by 12:24 a.m. Saturday.
Passengers were waiting in warming bus(es) until a replacement Greyhound bus arrived. Newport Township FPD firefighter/paramedics were on scene to provide any necessary EMS or rescue operations.
Westbound I-94 was re-opened by 12:58 a.m.
There were no alerts posted on Greyhound’s Facebook or Twitter accounts as of 12:01 a.m. Saturday, January 13, 2018; and there were no service alerts regarding the incident on Greyhound’s official website. At about 12:10 a.m. Saturday, the official Greyhound site showed a page that said the website was undergoing planned maintenance.
