Mundelein police and firefighter/paramedics responded about 7:12 p.m. Monday January 8, 2018 to a report a man on a bicycle hit by a pickup truck on Midlothian Road in front of Mundelein Fire Station 1 at 1000 North Midlothian Road.
The man was transported by Mundelein firefighter/paramedics to Level I Trauma Center Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville, where he was pronounced dead.
The bicyclist was an 85-year-old man, who was riding a bicycle in the southbound lanes of Midlothian Road at about 7:10 p.m. He turned his bike left and tried to ride across the street, but when he crossed into the oncoming, northbound lane, he was struck by a pickup truck driven by a 19-year-old driver. The speed limit on Midlothian Road is 35 MPH in both directions near the fire station.
Alcohol and drugs are not expected to be factor in the crash.
The Lake County coroner’s office scheduled an autopsy for Tuesday, January 9, 2018, and Mundelein police are working together with the Major Crash Assistance Team of Lake County and the state’s attorney’s office to investigate the crash.
No citations were issued.
