Algonquin police and Algonquin-Lake in the Hills firefighter/paramedics responded about 12:07 PM Tuesday January 2, 2018 to a report of a fire on the exterior of the building at Algonquin Sub Shop, 105 Filip Street Algonquin, Il . Siding caught fire on the right-rear corner of the building when the owner tried to thaw frozen pipes with a propane-powered heating source.
The fire was quickly extinguished, and the fire was declared out by 12:27 p.m.

As is routine in fires at restaurants, the Health Department and Building Department were called to the scene.
The restaurant was closed for repairs of smoke damage that extended to the interior.
Several fires in Chicagoland, including one in Aurora and one in Huntley in the last few days, have have been caused by attempts to thaw frozen pipes.
Chicago’s official National Weather Service station established a record low high on Monday (New year’s Day) January 1, 2017.
Rockford set a record low maximum of -1°F, and tied a record low (1969) of -13°F on Monday January 1, 2017.
Air temperature was about 5°F at the time of the Algonquin Subway Shop fire, after a low of -8°F about 6:00 a.m. to 8:00 a.m. Tuesday morning.
Fire departments across northern Illinois and southern Wisconsin are warning residents and business owners to use extreme caution when attempting thaw frozen pipes, and to follow manufacturer’s instructions when using heaters.
