Whale washes ashore at Point Reyes National Seashore — The Press Democrat
Biologists from the Marine Mammal Center performed a necropsy Tuesday on a 30-foot juvenile humpback whale that washed ashore Sunday. Researchers were working Tuesday morning to determine the cause of death. Five whales washed ashore this year, according to the Marine Mammal Center, a nonprofit research and rescue organization spanning San Luis Obispo County to Mendocino County.

The Marine Mammal Center team found tissue bruising on the right side of the body near the head and neck but did not find broken bones or signs of blunt for trauma associated with a crash with a ship. Muscle and skin tissue samples will be analyzed, and a final report on the cause of death is expected in about two weeks.

The Marine Mammal Center in Sausalito, CA and Kailua-Kona, HI reports it has responded to 27 stranded or dead humpback whales in its 42-year history or operation.

Police in Nassau County responded about 8 a.m. Tuesday December 26, 2017 to a report of a dead whale on shore in Atlantic Beach. The length of the Humpback whale was reported as about 31 feet long.

On Saturday, December 23, 2017 a dead dolphin was reported near Montauk Lighthouse, about 100 miles east of the location where the whale was discovered.
