Coyote Peterson tests the pinch of a Mallodon Beetle or Stag Beetle in Costa Rica.
Mallodon spinibarbis is found in Mexico, Costa Rica and South America, and is most often seen in the late summer and fall month in the southern hemisphere.
The bug, which reaches a maximum size of almost 3 inches, can fly and is attracted to lights.
Stag beetles are defined as a group of about 1,200 species of beetles in the family Lucanidae, presently classified in four subfamilies. Some species grow up to over 4.7 in (12 cm), but most are about 2.0 in (5 cm).
Mallodon is technically a genus of beetle belonging to the family Cerambycidae, which are known as longhorn beetles. But Mallodon look more like Stag beetles than Longhorn beetles. Stag beetles, especially adults, have longer pinchers than Mallodon, which has a more slender body.
