Mariano’s President Don Rosanova and Des Plaines Mayor Matthew Bogusz attended the pre-grand opening ribbon-cutting ceremony at the VIP opening for Mariano’s 41st grocery store, and presented dozens of bags of food for the Self Help Closet and Food Pantry in Des Plaines.
The first Mariano’s opened in Arlington Heights in July 2010. After seven years, the Arlington Heights Mariano’s still draws large crowds, and has operated while Dominick’s closed in 2013, Joe Caputo & Sons Fruit Market closed in 2015, and Ultra Foods closed in 2016 — all within a two mile radius of the flagship Arlington Heights Mariano’s store.
The new Mariano’s in Des Plaines opens to the public on Tuesday, March 21, 2017 at 6:00 a.m. at the northeast corner of Golf Road and Mount Prospect Road — the former location of Motor Coach Industries headquarters in a newly constructed parcel.
Construction of the 74,000-square-foot Mariano’s store followed an incentive program that lowers the site’s property taxes for 12 years, and gives a 50 percent rebate of Mariano’s sales taxes to the developers for the next 10 years, up to a total of $875,000.
In exchange for a driveway easement, Mariano’s developer Abbott Land & Investment Corp, of Bartlett, Illinois, agreed to construct about $670,000 in upgrades to neighboring Blackhawk Park, just east of Mariano’s. A new playground and picnic shelter, which will include an 8-foot-wide asphalt walking path and a 120-by-240-foot soccer field, were scheduled to be open to the public by the time the Des Plaines Mariano’s opens.
The Des Plaines Mariano’s, 10 East Golf Road, is less than 3.5 miles from the Arlington Heights location, which is a 4-mile drive on Northwest Highway and Mount Prospect Road. The Des Plaines Mariano’s is also less than 1.6 miles east on Rand Road and south on Mount Prospect Road from the Walmart Supercenter in Mount Prospect.
