Bloomingdale police officer Raymond Murrell was killed in the line of duty about 9:30 p.m. Thursday January 19, 2017 while responding to an emergency call. Bloomingdale Police Department reports that police Officer Raymond Murrell died tragically while responding to a crime in progress. Firefighter/paramedics arrived to find Murrell’s police SUV crashed into a traffic signal/light pole with the SUV heavily damaged and on fire. Firefighters quickly extinguished the fire and quickly extricated Murrell, who had no vital signs at the scene. He was transported to Adventist GlenOaks Hospital in Glendale Heights where doctors, nurses and paramedics worked to get a heart for about 90 minutes before he was pronounced dead.
Bloomingdale police say when Murrell began working for the Bloomingdale Police Department in March 2016, he quickly made his mark in their police profession and within the Bloomingdale community. In less than a year he had received a Life-Saving commendation among many other well-deserved accolades, according to Bloomingdale Police Department.

Officer Murrell grew up in Addison with a lifelong ambition to become a police officer. An uncle who is a suburban police officer, was a source of inspiration.
Bloomingdale Police Department hired Murrell in March 2016 after he graduated from the Suburban Law Enforcement Academy at the College of DuPage. He earned distinguished honors — the prestigious George Graves Award, which is only awarded to one recipient per class.
