Shakou, described as a “high-end, urban-style” sit-down restaurant offering sushi and other Asian cuisine, is planning to open a new 176-seat restaurant inside a 3,000-square-foot space at 70 North Vail Avenue — formerly occupied by Armand’s Pizzeria.
It didn’t take long for village officials to successfully meet with the property owner and the owner of Shakou, and score a new lease for the prime space at the southwest corner of Vail Avenue and Wing Street.
Armand’s opened the weekend of December 2, 2016, after relocating a block away from its former location to a larger location at the southwest corner of Vail Avenue and Campbell Street, 101 West Campbell Street. Armand’s new location is the former location of Circa 57, a 1950s-style diner, which closed in September 2015. Armand’s, which leased their original Arlington Heights location, owns their new location. The news for the two restaurants confirms one of the highlights of Arlington Heights — a thriving dining center in downtown.
Shakou opened its first location in Libertyville in 2013, followed by restaurants in St. Charles, Barrington, and Park Ridge. The styling of the Arlington Heights location, which will be the fifth location, is being planned and inspired by the Park Ridge location with accent lighting. Shakou is also planning to have large windows that will open to a renovated outdoor dining patio to the south near Berry Yo.
Renovations for Shakou’s at Wing and Vail are expected to begin soon, and be ready for a spring or early summer 2017 opening.
Shakou, which means “social life” in Japanese, was recently named one of the Top 100 “Hot Spot” Restaurants in America by Open Table.
