The Arlington Heights Police Department was recognized by the International Association of Chiefs of Police at their annual conference in San Diego as it was awarded 1st place in the 2016 National Law Enforcement Challenge for all municipal police departments having between 101-350 sworn officers.
The National Law Enforcement Challenge is a national highway safety competition designed to recognize exemplary traffic safety programs and to encourage departments to prioritize education and enforcement activities in the target areas of impaired driving, occupant protection, and speed enforcement. Like-sized agencies compete against each other nationwide and are judged by a panel of traffic safety and law enforcement professionals. The various categories evaluated by the panel include a department’s policy statements, training, public information and education efforts, enforcement activities, and overall program effectiveness. The 2016 award recipients were judged on their efforts throughout calendar year 2015.
Additionally, the International Association of Chiefs of Police also awarded the Arlington Heights Police Department the prestigious Clayton J. Hall Memorial Award for 2016. This special award honors the memory of Clayton J. Hall of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Mr. Hall was a renowned leader in the arena of highway traffic safety who helped develop the Law Enforcement Challenge concept and many other innovative traffic safety programs throughout his distinguished career. The Clayton J. Hall Memorial Award is presented annually to the law enforcement agency that is judged to have the most comprehensive traffic safety program in the nation and best represents what a successful traffic safety program should be. All agencies, regardless of size, are considered for the award. Recent winners from the past three years include the Maryland State Police, the California Highway Patrol, and the Ontario Provincial Police of Canada.
