Arlington Heights police received a report about 9:02 AM Sunday, July 3, 2016 of a used syringe and needle in the street at Euclid Avenue and Haddow Avenue Arlington Heights, IL. Police received a report that a bloody syringe and needle were located near the curb in the street on Haddow Avenue just north of Euclid Avenue.

Arlington Heights police collected the biohazard in a tube while wearing protective gloves. A “sharp” receptacle for hypodermic needles is located at Arlington Heights Police Headquarters, which is where the needle and syringe — contaminated with blood — was relocated.

An accidental stick by a contaminated syringe and hypodermic needle as the potential to transmit HIV, Hepatitis B virus, Hepatitis C virus and other biohazards, which can cause life-threatening infections. The careless placement of the needle and syringe biohazard could have been discovered by a child playing in the area.

The contaminated needle and syringe appeared to have been dumped at the curb, possibly by a Frontier Days patron where hundreds of people park on side streets north of Recreation Park.
