The Supreme Court on Thursday reaffirmed that the value of creating a diverse student body allows university officials to consider race in making admission decisions. The 4-3 SCOTUS decision upholds a University of Texas plan that has been the subject of years of legal battles.

The opinion written by Justice Anthony M. Kennedy supported previous high-court rulings that the importance of diversity justifies some intrusion on the Constitution’s guarantee of equal protection. The government; however, is generally prohibited from making decisions based on race.
A Supreme Court tie has blocked Obama’s immigration plan, which would have let millions of immigrants stay in the U.S. The ruling prompted harsh words from the president. CBS News chief legal correspondent Jan Crawford joins CBSN to discuss the decision.
The Supreme Court’s 4-4 decision invalidates President Barack Obama’s DAPA Executive Order. DAPA, if implemented, would have protected parents of American-born children from deportation. The SCOTUS 4-4 decision means the lower court ruling blocking DAPA remains effective.
