During Spring and early Summer many people look forward to better weather and plan outdoor celebrations – graduations, weddings, family reunions and other parties. The Village of Arlington Heights reminds residents that when making plans, residents should remember that popular “sky lanterns,” which look like a small air balloon and use a candle or other fuel to rise into the sky, are not permitted for use in Illinois — on orders of the State Fire Marshal.
Once a Sky Lantern is lit and airborne, there is no control of where it may travel. Wind may force it back to the ground and blow hot air out of the sides. There is a risk of a fire if a flame drops onto rooftops, trees or power lines before the flame is totally extinguished.
Because of the risk of fire using sky lanterns, the Illinois State Fire Marshal’s Office has banned the use of these devices in Illinois and has added sky lanterns to a list of prohibited items under the Fireworks Regulation Act. For any questions about Sky Lanterns or other fireworks regulation, residents are urged to call the Arlington Heights Fire Department or Building Services.
