The Department of Justice says the FBI has accessed the iPhone used by Syed Farook in the San Bernardino terrorist shooting.
“The FBI has now successfully retrieved the data stored on the San Bernardino terrorist’s iPhone and therefore no longer requires the assistance from Apple required by this Court Order.”
— DOJ spokeswoman Melanie Newman
Apple declined to help retrieve the terrorist’s Apple iPhone 5c, saying giving the FBI access to the iPhone would compromise the security of all iPhone users. The company has argued that law enforcement officials don’t understand the consequences of creating a backdoor, and attempted to tell customers that it was impossible to crack into the phone, and that the company had customers’ privacy in mind first as priority.
A law enforcement official said the hack would work on any iPhone 5C running iOS 9. The FBI today did not reveal the third party that help crack the iPhone 5c.
