Russian President Vladimir Putin chaired a meeting with US Secretary of State John Kerry at the Kremlin on Thursday. During the meeting the pair acknowledged the good progress made by the two nations in restoring peace to some parts of Syria, as well as engaging in some back and forth over the fact Kerry had to carry his briefcase while disembarking his plane.
SOT, Vladimir Putin, Russian President (Russian): “Today, when I saw you descending from the plane and carrying your stuff, I was a little upset.”
SOT, Vladimir Putin, Russian President (Russian): “On the one hand, it’s very affordable, on the other hand, I thought: apparently, the situation is too bad in the US if there is no one to help the Secretary of State to carry his briefcase.”
SOT, Vladimir Putin, Russian President (Russian): “Nevertheless it seems the economy is fine, there is no large slowdown [in the US]. Then I thought: maybe in this briefcase there was something that you couldn’t trust anyone else with, something valuable; apparently, you brought money to haggle on key issues.”
SOT, Vladimir Putin, Russian President (Russian): “I hope that your visit will allow us to bring closer the positions on further settlement of the Syrian issue and as you already mentioned, of the Ukrainian conflict.”
