Former Toronto Mayor Rob Ford has died after battling a rare and aggressive form of cancer.
Rob Ford served as the 64th mayor of Toronto from 2010 to 2014. Ford also served as a city councilor representing Ward 2 of Etobicoke North. He was first elected to City Council in the 2000 Toronto municipal election, and was re-elected to his council seat twice.
On September 17, 2014, Toronto media revealed that Ford was diagnosed with liposarcoma, a rare form of cancer in abdominal fat cells. Ford was treated with chemotherapy and surgery after suffering from severe abdominal pains. He was admitted to Humber River Regional Hospital in North York in September 2014 with an abdominal tumour, and a biopsy analysis.
After a lengthy surgery in May 2015, Ford announced that doctors cleared him of cancer, but in October 2015 Ford announced that a tumor was growing.
On March 17, 2016, Ford’s office announced he was in hospital “with his family beside him” as chemotherapy treatment had not succeeded. He transferred for palliative care on March 20, 2017 and he died on March 22.
