President Obama begins a three-day trip to Alaska where his move to rename America’s highest mountain is drawing praise across the political spectrum. But as Bill Plante reports, some are slamming his move.
President Barack Obama is expected to make history today by traveling to Alaska and renaming Mount McKinley to “Denali” — the original name based on a Koyukon word for “high” or “tall.”
The mountain is surrounded by Denali National Park and Preserve.
Mount McKinley has been the mountain’s name from 1917 to 2015. The highest mountain peak in North America has a summit elevation of 20,237 feet (6,168 m) above sea level. The mountain rises 18,000 feet (5,500 m) above its land base. The base-to-peak rise is considered the tallest of any mountain in the world that is situated entirely above sea level.
