Breaking report when police were responding to an active shooter call at a movie theater in Tennessee.
Police on a traffic stop responded about 1:13 p.m. Wednesday to a report from two women that they had been hit with pepper spray in the Carmike Hickory 8 Theater, 901 Bell Road. A man was also hit with pepper spray and suffered a superficial wound from a hatchet by an armed man in his fifties. There were eight people, including the gunman, in the theater, which was playing Mad Max.
When police arrived, they discovered the man wearing a backpack on his chest and a surgical mask on his face.
While Nashville Metro police and SWAT were responding to the theater, one police officer entered the theater. The gunman shot at police, and the police officer returned fire, then backed out of the theater. The suspect was shot and killed by police as he exited the rear entrance of the theater. He was described as a male/white subject, age 29, wearing a backpack with a hoax device or fake bomb. The suspect was also carrying another backpack. One or both of the backpacks were destroyed by the bomb squad. Initial reports described the man as a 51-year-old man.
