The Calbuco volcano erupted Wednesday for the first time in more than 42 years, billowing a huge ash cloud over a sparsely populated, mountainous area in southern Chile.

Volcano Calbuco in Chile erupts for the first time since 1970s – sending smoke several miles into the sky.

Authorities report no hot rocks or lava had been seen so far in the eruption of the Calbuco volcano — only ash. Chile has the second largest chain of volcanoes in the world after Indonesia, with around 500 that are potentially active.
