With measured remarks and a conciliatory tone, police, political leaders and civil-rights activists on Thursday sought to reduce tensions after two police officers were shot in front of the Ferguson Police Department.

Two officers were shot in front of the Ferguson Police Department early Thursday while demonstrators were gathered across the street — an attack the county police chief described as “an ambush” that could easily have killed both men.

Attorney General Eric Holder condemned the shootings of two police officers outside the Ferguson police department, calling it a “pure ambush” and the act of a “damn punk.” He also announced a pilot program aimed at curbing racial bias.

Attorney General Eric Holder announced selection of six cities to serve as pilot sites to restore the faith in integrity of law enforcement and strengthen the bonds between police officers and the citizens they serve. The cities include Birmingham, Alabama; Stockton, California; Gary, Indiana; Minneapolis, Minnesota; Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; and Fort Worth, Texas.

Bradley Rayford, who joined protestors outside the Ferguson, Missouri Police Department Wednesday night, says bullets “wooshed” by his head before striking two police officers.

St. Louis County Police Chief Jon Belmar says the two officers shot during a protest in Ferguson aren’t expected to have long-term injuries

St. Louis County Police Chief Jon Belmar reported that the Webster Grove police officer was shot in the high point of the cheek right under the right eye where the bullet traveled to a region right behind his right ear.

The St. Louis County police officer was struck in the right shoulder and the bullet “came out” near his right scapula (shoulder blade) and spine. Police Chief Jon Belmar reported that there are no remarkable long-term injuries suffered by these two police officers.
