Elk Grove Village police and firefighter/paramedics responded about 11:38 AM Thursday to an activated fire/trouble alarm at Elk Grove High School, 500 Elk Grove Boulevard, Elk Grove Village, IL. Police and firefighter/paramedics received a report of a fire/trouble alarm and apparently discovered a power failure.
The first Elk Grove High School-related tweets from parents and students on Twitter mentioned a power failure at about 11:05 a.m. There were no posts on District 214’s official Twitter account as of 4:00 p.m. There was one tweet that referred to a weather update “from our superintendent” with a link. Unfortunately, the District 214 website was apparently overloaded. After 30 minutes and counting, the referred page would not load. Next, the front page at District 214 was inaccessible from at least 3:00 p.m. to 4:15 p.m. when checked.
Many of you have asked us to explain why school reopened today. Please read this letter from our superintendent. http://t.co/DFNsqJTxpF

District 214’s Facebook page also had a link to the weather update letter from the superintendent, but that link was also inaccessible. The Facebook page did not have any other updates following the message with the failed link.
As of 4:15 p.m. Thursday, it was unknown why no personnel at District 214 had the ability to copy and paste the superintendent’s letter as a Facebook timeline post to provide information that would adapt to the failed content on the failed website. It is also not known why District 214 did not use social media (Facebook and Twitter) as an alternative to update the status of the Elk Grove High School power failure, or the status of a chemistry experiment that caused an activated fire alarm at Rolling Meadows High School. The activated fire alarm caused evacuation of some people into 3°F weather with a wind chill of -20°F at about 12:34 p.m.
Meanwhile, students and parents on Twitter reported most of the important information of the day for District 214 … that electricity and heat were not working at Elk Grove High School late Thursday morning and early afternoon.
District 25 and District 59 schools were closed today. St James, Our Lady of Wayside, and St Peter Lutheran schools in Arlington Heights were also closed today.
St Viator in Arlington Heights opened late today. Christian Liberty Academy in Arlington Heights was open all day.
