VIDEO: Fire at the Chicago Firehouse Restaurant viewed from a high-rise nearby.
Chicago police and firefighters responded about 10:21 a.m. to a report of a fire at the Chicago Firehouse Restaurant, 1401 South Michigan Avenue. Firefighters on arrival reported smoke showing and elevated the alarm to a Still and Box and then a 2-11. By 11:50 a.m. the roof of the former firehouse had fallen into the second floor.
The 2-11 Alarm fire was struck out at 12:02 p.m.
The building was the former firehouse for Engine 104, and was built with limestone and yellow brick in 1905. Before the building was remodeled to the Firehouse Restaurant, the building was used for scenes in the 1991 movie “Backdraft.” The upper floor of the building served as the movie’s Firehouse 17 second-story dorm and locker room interior.
The Chicago Firehouse Restaurant opened in 2000.
