Chicago police responded about 4 a.m. to a report of a vehicle smash and grab crime in progress at the Neiman Marcus store at 737 North Michigan Avenue. Offenders crashed a white Dodge Grand Caravan through the Superior Street entrance of the store.

On arrival police officers spotted several people (possibly eight total) fleeing the store eastbound on St. Clair Street, and discovered the white van 10 to 15 feet inside the store — a few feet from the store’s escalator.

A witness spotted at least one person hiding behind a trash dumpster/bin and notified police. Police had at least two people in custody soon after the notification.

Police also recovered most of the property taken in the smash and grab burglary.

Police are also investigating a case where smash and grab burglars rammed a minivan through the front of a pawn shop in Marquette Park.

On Thanksgiving Day, a truck was used to smash through the back wall of J-Bees Clothing and Footwear in the Austin neighborhood where offenders grabbed high-end clothing from the store.
