A photo by Johnny Nguyen showing a white police officer hugging a black Ferguson protester in Portland has gone viral.
Freelance photographer Johnny Nguyen captured the image when Portland Police Sgt. Bret Barnum wearing riot gear and 12-year-old Devonte Hart embraced in a hug at a November 25 rally in Portland, Oregon protesting the decision of a Missouri grand jury not to indict Ferguson police officer Darren Wilson in the shooting death of teen Michael Brown.
After talking to Devonte about such things as school, art and life, Barnum said he pointed to the “Free Hugs” sign and asked, “Do I get one of those?”
Devonte’s adoption by Sarah and Jessica Hart rescued him from a life of drugs, extreme poverty and ghetto dangers.
