CNN: Was hatchet attack related to Islamic extremism?
A man, identified as Zale H. Thompson, lunged toward four police officers with a hatchet in his hand. He hit one officer in the arm and hit another in the head — critically injuring the second officer. One or both of the uninjured officers were able to shoot and kill Thompson. A female bystander was hit in the back by a bullet from a police officer’s gun aimed at the attacker. She was transported to a local hospital, but her condition is not known.
Zale Thompson is reported to have had a Facebook page with extremist Islamic views, but any direct connections with a terrorist group have not been established.
