CNN’s Will Ripley reports in the past week, at least 55 people in Japan have become ill with dengue fever.
Japan is experiencing the largest outbreak of Dengue Fever since World War II. All victims are believed to have been bitten by mosquitos while visiting Yoyogi Park in Tokyo.
Symptoms of Dengue Fever include fever of 104°F or more, headache, muscle and joint pains, and a characteristic skin rash that is similar to the measles spots. In some cases the disease develops into life-threatening dengue hemorrhagic fever, resulting in bleeding, low levels of blood platelets and blood plasma leakage, dengue shock syndrome with low blood pressure. The course of the illness about one week, and is commonly associated with a biphasic or saddleback episode with the second episode lasting about two days.
Treatment of Dengue Fever is supportive with oral and intravenous hydration, and blood transfusion.
