An Arlington Heights man who lives only blocks from John Hersey High School in the Arlington Glen Condominiums was charged Sunday with shooting at a vehicle in Waukegan. The shooting occurred within 1,000 feet of a school in Waukegan, and the suspect admitted he was a gang member when he was arrested.
Jose Guzman, 18, of the 1500 block of North Windsor, just west of Hersey High School in Arlington Heights, was charged with aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, unlawful possession of a firearm by a street gang member, and aggravated discharge of a firearm within 1,000 feet of a school, according to a Waukegan Police Department.

A Waukegan police sergeant was in an unmarked police car near Glen Rock Avenue and Jackson Street, just southwest of the Washington Campus of Waukegan High School in Waukegan, when he saw Jose Guzman walking and then talking to “unknown subjects in a black SUV.
The police sergeant witnessed an offender — later identified as Jose Guzman — take out a handgun and started firing at the vehicle. The Waukegan sergeant pursued and arrested Guzman, as the targeted SUV fled the area. No injuries were reported.
The Washington Campus (East Campus) of Waukegan High School is home to the Ninth Grade Center of Waukegan High School at 1011 Washington Street, Waukegan. Also located near the shooting incident, is the Alternative/Optional/Stephens Education Center at 1020 Glen Rock Avenue. AOEC/Stephens Center involves education programs that target middle school and high school students “who have not found success within the traditional classroom setting” according to the Waukegan Public School website (aoec.wps60.org)
Jose Guzman is scheduled to appear in Lake County court on September 24, 2014 at 1:30 p.m.
