Magnitude 6.1 Earthquake Injures at Least 87 in Napa City, California

A magnitude 6.0 earthquake struck at 3:20 a.m. PT near American Canyon about 6 miles southwest of Napa, the U.S. Geological Survey.

According to the City of Napa, four mobile homes were destroyed and two on fire on Orchard Avenue in north Napa.

Street closures were listed at First, Second and Third Streets, which are closed from Jefferson to Soscol. Main Street is closed from Third to Pearl due to damaged structures. The public should stay out of these areas.

According to the city, PG&E crews are responding to approximately 50 reported gas leaks, and there are approximately 30 water main leaks. Both water treatment plants running, no damage. Some areas have no water due to main breaks and some areas no or low pressure. Water remains safe to drink.

The Red Cross evacuation center has been moved to the Crosswalk Community Church, 2590 First Street.

Drop boxes for debris will be placed at all public schools.

A large number of aftershocks are expected.

Napa Valley firefighters worked hard to get a water supply after they discovered water main breaks had hampered their ability to get water on the fires. No injuries were reported in the fires.

The design of the Alexandria Hotel includes three square towers on the street facing corners, a tile roof, overhanging eaves, and both slanted bay and rounded windows. The Alexandria Hotel was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982.
