The incident occurred about one week after Allison Spahr, age 11, was killed by a falling Oak tree at Devil’s Lake State Park in Baraboo, Wisconsin. The tree tipped over at the roots during high winds from a thunderstorm.
A large branch also fell in the 700 block of North Douglas Avenue in Arlington Heights, but no injuries were reported. Gust near 30 mph were reported early Sunday morning/overnight and during the day on Sunday. No injuries were reported.
Is it possible the recent hard winter has damaged trees? “Frost crack” can cause serious damage to trees by lengthening already existing wounds following repeated freezes. Growth periods followed by hard, fast freezes can damage trees.
