Five high school students in Northern New Jersey are facing charges for allegedly using a printer to reproduce $20 bills, and then spending the bills at local businesses.
Counterfeit $20 bills with the same serial numbers were discovered at businesses in and near the city of New Milford over a four-week period beginning in April 2014. Police reviewed security video and identified the students.
Fake $20 bills were made by a student on his home laser printer and were given to other students who used the bills for purchases. The first reported case was discovered at a Dunkin’ Donuts after police said seven $20 bill were discovered with the exact same serial number.
The students were charged as juveniles and were released to their parents.
