Illegal drone activity caused the closure of runways at New York Stewart airfield Friday night, December 13, 2024. According to the FAA flying a drone during the day or at night is legal if the operator is an FAA Certified Part 107 Drone Pilot that is flying below 400 feet, isn’t causing a hazard, and it isn’t encroaching on airport airspace.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul issued a statement regarding the drones on Saturday, December 14, 2024.

“Last night, the runways at Stewart Airfield were shut down for approximately one hour due to drone activity in the airspace. This has gone too far.

“In mid-November, I directed the New York State Intelligence Center to actively investigate drone sightings and coordinate with federal law enforcement to address this issue, and those efforts are ongoing. But in order to allow state law enforcement to work on this issue, I am now calling on Congress to pass the Counter-UAS Authority Security, Safety, and Reauthorization Act. This bill would reform legal authorities to counter-UAS and strengthen the FAA’s oversight of drones, and would extend counter-UAS activities to select state and local law enforcement agencies.

“Extending these powers to New York State and our peers is essential. Until those powers are granted to state and local officials, the Biden Administration must step in by directing additional federal law enforcement to New York and the surrounding region to ensure the safety of our critical infrastructure and our people.

— Kathy Hochul, Governor New York

Meanwhile last week over Eugene, Oregon, a pilot conversation with air traffic control on December 7, 2024 around 8:30 p.m. PT indicated a UFO at about “my one o’clock about 1,000 feet high zipping towards us and then back out toward the ocean — red in color — moving at extreme speeds, I don’t even know how to describe it (unintelligible) — 661.”

Air traffic control replied, “You are clear to maneuver as necessary at left and right to avoid the UFO out there, and all the reports you can give us are good information, appreciated it.”

A pilot report in Oregon indicated the strobe-like lights jumped as high as 30,000 feet to 50,000 feet.

In the video below at 13:26, Jonathan Rupprecht, a drone attorney, discusses the role of DHS, DOJ, FBI, FAA in drone regulation. The FAA is assigned the role of remote drone identification and possibly determining the location of the drone operator location.

Sightings of mysterious drones hovering over residents have been observed in four states as of Friday, December 13, 2024 as more lawmakers, including Rep. Nicole Malliotakis (D-NY) demand an investigation of the source of the suspicious aircraft (CBS News). YouTube Tips ⓘ
