Police, firefighters, and paramedics from Schaumburg responded about 5:08 p.m. Monday, November 25, 2024 to a report of a female pedestrian hit by a vehicle. The female pedestrian was unresponsive in the street on Algonquin Road near Thoreau Drive, and CPR was being administered by an ER nurse.
Police and paramedics on arrival discovered a young girl down in the street, began treatment, and immediately departed for Northwest Community Hospital by 5:16 p.m. There were extra paramedics on board the ambulance administering Advanced Life Support on the way to the hospital.
According to the Cook County Medical Examiners Office, a 12 year-old girl of Palatine was pronounced dead at 5:42 p.m. Monday, November 25, 2024 after being rushed by Schaumburg Fire Department paramedics to Northwest Community Hospital. The girl was identified as Angela Guan.
A dark-colored minivan was involved in the crash that hit the girl. The driver of the vehicle came to a stop in the eastbound lanes of Algonquin Road, across the street from the 7-Eleven in the Park Place Shopping Center strip mall. Police report the driver is cooperating with the investigation.
MCAT-STAR (the Major Case Assistance Team-Serious Traffic Accident Reconstruction unit) was on scene to assist the Schaumburg Police Department with the investigation until around 10:00 p.m. Hanover Township Emergency Services was on scene for lighting and traffic control.
Initially the westbound Algonquin Road lanes were open, but all eastbound lanes were shut down. Eventually during the extended investigation, Algonquin Road was closed in both directions between Meacham Road and Frontage Road near Route 53.
The vehicle vs pedestrian incident marks the second fatality at the intersection in a five week period. A 22 year-old male Asian motorcyclist traveling at high speed was killed when he crashed into a car at the same intersection on Wednesday, October 16, 2024 at about 1:48 p.m. The speed limit on Algonquin road is 40 mph, according to Google Maps Street View images captured September 2023.
The intersection involves Thorntree Lane to the north into Plum Grove Estates, Algonquin Road to the east and to the west, and Thoreau Drive to the south. the area is well-lit by street lights, and a Mobil gas station at 1601 East Algonquin Road in Schaumburg. The area north of Algonquin Road is unincorporated Palatine Township.
The intersection is controlled by stoplights that include left turn arrow lights.
Thorntree Lane north of the intersection includes a southbound lane and a northbound lane and a left turn only lane to eastbound Algonquin Road.
Thoreau Drive south of the intersection has a dedicated right turn lane from northbound Thoreau Drive to eastbound Algonquin Road. The Thoreau Drive roadway is separated by a curbed, grassy median, about 20 feet wide, that is tree-lined. Southbound Thoreau Drive has two lanes south of Algonquin Road.
Eastbound Algonquin Road has three lanes and a left turn only lane to northbound Thorntree Lane west of the intersection, and three lanes east of the intersection.
Westbound Algonquin Road has two lanes and a left turn only lane to southbound Thoreau Drive East of the intersection, and two lanes west of the intersection.
There are well marked crosswalks on all four sides of the intersection. There are also sidewalks at the corners connected to the crosswalks at all four corners of the intersection.
