A man was seriously injured in a shooting, and a female suspect has been charged after the shooting in unincorporated Wonder Lake on Thursday, October 10, 2024.
At 11:05 a.m., Thursday, October 10, 2024 McHenry County Sheriff’s Deputies and Wonder Lake Fire Protection and firefighters and paramedics from the area were dispatched to a report of two possible gunshot victims in the block of 8900 East Tryon Grove Road just north of Wonder Lake. Upon arrival, a male was located with a life-threatening gunshot wound and a female, Aneta Marsek, was located with non-life-threatening injuries, allegedly shooting herself. Two medical helicopters were also assigned to respond to the scene.
The male victim, age 41, was flown to Level 1 Trauma Center OSF Saint Anthony Medical Center in Rockford, where he was listed in critical condition. Aneta was flown to Level 1 Trauma Center Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville.
Wonder Lake Fire Protection District, Richmond Township Fire Department, Hebron-Alden-Greenwood Fire Protection District, Mercyhealth MD-1, UW Med Flight and Superior Air Med all responded to the scene.
Following an investigation, Aneta Marsek, age 45, of Wonder Lake, was arrested and charged with the following …
One count of attempted murder (Class X)
One count of aggravated battery with a firearm (Class X)
One count of aggravated domestic battery (Class 2)
Two counts of obstructing justice (Class 4)
The obstructing justice counts were applied after Marsek allegedly made a false statement telling McHenry County Sheriff’s deputies that she and the male victim were shot by an unknown intruder. Marsek also allegedly hid the weapon used in the shooting
The incident is under investigation by the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office.
The charges against this individual are merely allegations against them. All defendants are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

According to an article published by ABC 7 Chicago on October 15, 2012, there was a 33 year-old female from Volo of the same name, Anita Marsek, that was the subject of a search along with her missing daughters. Anita Marsek and her two daughters were found in the Wisconsin Dells while the three were living in the woods in the family’s SUV on Sunday, October 14, 2012. Marsek’s estranged husband took custody of the children, and Marsek was treated at a facility in Oshkosh
