Police officer, firefighters and paramedics from Waukegan responded on Tuesday, September 17th, 2024, to a call reporting a person shot inside a vehicle in the area of the intersection Melrose Avenue and Elmwood Avenue in Waukegan. The victim was transported to Vista Medical Center East, where despite care and treatment, she was pronounced dead in the emergency room.
The Lake County Coroner’s Office was notified and responded to the hospital.
The deceased was identified as 48-year-old Yessenia Novoa-Poveda, of Waukegan. On Wednesday, September 18, 2024, an autopsy was conducted at the Lake County Coroner’s Office. Autopsy results indicate that Ms. Novoa-Poveda died from a gunshot wound of the back.
The shooting incident discovered in a neighborhood of single-family home is under investigation by the Waukegan Police Department.
