U.S. infectious disease authority Dr. Anthony Fauci, the former top U.S. infectious disease expert, was hospitalized recently after being infected with West Nile virus and is now recovering at home, according to a statement by a spokesperson Saturday, August 24, 2024.

West Nile virus (WNV) infection in humans is primarily spread through the bite of an infected mosquito. Most people do suffer from a serious infection, but about 25 percent of infected individuals develop fever, headache, body aches, vomiting, diarrhea, and/or rash, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. About 1 out of 150 infected people develop a serious, sometimes fatal, illness that causes meningitis and/or encephalitis, severe tremors, low oxygen levels, respiratory arrest and cardiac arrest.

There are no vaccines to prevent WNV, and there are no medicines to treat WNV. In severe cases, WNV treatment with Advanced Life Support measures in an Intensive Care Unit, including the use of a mechanical ventilator, may be necessary.

Chief Medical Correspondent, CBS News Jonathan LaPook, M.D. and Professor of Medicine, NYU Langone Health posted on X.com at 10:20 a.m. Saturday August 24, 2024 that he just got off the phone with Dr. Anthony Fauci. “Dr. Fauci was hospitalized about ten days ago after developing fever, chills, and severe fatigue. Evaluation revealed that he had been infected with the West Nile virus, likely from a mosquito bite that he got in his backyard. He left the hospital three days ago and is recovering at home. The prognosis is for a full recovery.”

According to the CDC, the best way to prevent West Nile is protection from mosquito bites.

Protection advice from the CDC includes …

Use Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)-registered insect repellents.

Wear loose-fitting, long-sleeved shirts and pants.

Wear clothing and gear treated with permethrin.

Control mosquitoes indoors and outdoors.

Permethrin info from the CDC …

Permethrin is an insecticide that kills or repels mosquitoes. You can buy permethrin-treated clothing and gear or treat items yourself. Treated items can include: boots, shirts, pants, socks, and tents. These items will help prevent mosquito bites.

Do not use permethrin products directly on skin.

Buy permethrin-treated clothing and gear.

Permethrin-treated items provide protection after multiple washings.

Read product label to find out how long the protection will last.
