A Mount Prospect man was struck and killed Thursday night in a crash with a crossover SUV on Elmhurst Road between Dempster Street and Kathleen Drive. Initially authorities did not confirm whether the man was on a bicycle or whether he was a pedestrian.
Police, firefighters and paramedics from Des Plaines responded about 9:30 p.m. Thursday, August 15, 2024 to a report of a bicyclist hit by a vehicle in the northbound lanes in the block of 700 North Elmhurst Road just north of Dempster Street in Des Plaines.
A 911 caller reported a male in his 40s was unresponsive and not breathing after he was hit by the vehicle. When police, firefighters and paramedics arrived they discovered a man in traumatic cardiac arrest.
NOTE: Checking on a tip that Mount Prospect firefighters and paramedics transported the patient, not Des Plaines.
Des Plaines Fire Department paramedics treated the man with Advanced Life Support and CPR, and immediately transported the man to Level 1 Trauma Center Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge.
According to the Cook County Medical Examiners Office, the man was pronounced dead at 10:02 p.m. The identity of the man was not initially released, but Cook County Medical Examiners Office records indicated the victim was a male/white Latino, age 41.
Des Plaines Police Department investigators were working past midnight Thursday/Friday while the northbound lanes of Elmhurst Road (Route 83) were closed between Dempster Street and and Kathleen Drive near the border of Des Planes and Mount Prospect.
Elmhurst Road is a 4-lane arterial roadway with two lanes northbound and two lanes southbound with a painted median about 3 feet wide. The Speed Limit sign at the scene for northbound north of Dempster Street is posted 35 MPH. The Speed Limit south of Dempster Street is also 35 MPH.
Road conditions were dry with no rain around the time of the crash.
