The Schiller Park Police Department on Thursday, August 1, 2024 announced the completion of an investigation of a fatal shooting at a road rage incident on Irving Park Road, just east of I-294 in Schiller Park.
On Tuesday, July 30, 2024 at 5:30 p.m. the Schiller Park Police Department responded to the area of Irving Park Road and Scott Street for the report of shots fired. Upon arrival, police located a male and female subject with gunshot wounds near a black Nissan Sentra, facing eastbound. Schiller Park Fire Department paramedics were also dispatched to the scene. Both subjects were treated by responding paramedics and transported to local hospitals for their injuries.
One of the subjects, now identified as Malachi N. Johnson, 19, of Streamwood, Illinois, who was transported to Level 1 Trauma Center Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, was pronounced deceased a short time later.
The female subject, who was transported to Loyola Medical Center, was treated for her injuries, and was released.
Several other subjects involved in the incident were detained by responding police officers and brought back to the police station for investigation. Their vehicle, a black Chevy Traverse was located about three blocks northeast of the shooting scene.
The Major Case Assistance Team (MCAT) was requested by the Schiller Park Police Department for assistance in the fatal shooting investigation.
After completion of the investigation, the conclusion was that Malachi N. Johnson, along with another subject, became involved in a road-rage incident while driving southbound on I-294 EAST. The dispute continued into the 10000 block of Irving Park Road where the drivers of both vehicles had stopped for traffic. While stopped next to each other, Malachi N. Johnson exited his vehicle and proceeded towards the other vehicle. Once there, both subjects brandished firearms and shots were exchanged. One of the shots struck the Malachi N. Johnson in the upper body. The other armed subject, along with the occupants inside of the black Chevy Traverse, were not struck.
After reviewing all evidence, along with interviews of involved individuals and witnesses, it was decided, along with the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office, that no charges would be brought against the second individual involved, as it was determined that he acted in self-defense, and that he possessed a valid FOID and CCL.
ORIGINAL REPORT
Police, firefighters and paramedics from Schiller Park responded about 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 30, 2024 to what appeared to be a road rage incident with shots fired in the block of 10000 Irving Park Road (just east of Mannheim Road and I-294).
According to the Schiller Park Police Department, one involved vehicle, a Nissan Sentra, was occupied by a male and female adult. The other vehicle, a Chevy Traverse, was occupied by a male and female adult, along with three younger individuals.
The incident occurred in the eastbound lanes of Irving Park Road in front apartment buildings, and just east of the Shell gas station. A male subject in the Nissan was fatally shot. According to the Cook County Medical Examiner, the victim is a male/black, age 19, and was pronounced dead about 6:10 p.m. The victim is believed to have lived in Streamwood.
A witness reported seeing the male with his upper body in the vehicle and his feet hanging out the driver’s side door opening. Another witness reported seeing chest compressions administered for CPR, and blood coming from the male victim.
The male victim that was shot and killed, was accompanied by a female, who also suffered bullet wounds. She was transported by Schiller Park Fire Department paramedics to a nearby hospital and was listed in “stable condition” late Tuesday night.
A witness in the neighborhood said he saw a woman from the Nissan Sentra yelling on a cell phone on Irving Park Road immediately after the shooting.
According to the Schiller Park Police Department, the shooting was an isolated incident and all subjects involved in the incident have been accounted for. Initially, there were no charges were announced, and there were no suspects described as being in custody.
There was a secondary crime scene with a perimeter of police tape around a black Chevy Traverse facing westbound on Montrose Avenue, just west of the intersection of Montrose Avenue and Emerson Avenue. The intersection was closed. The driver’s door window was shattered and glass was on the street at the driver’s door. The secondary scene was about three blocks northeast of the shooting scene on Irving Park Road.
Initially it was unknown if there was a police pursuit and traffic stop at Montrose Avenue and Emerson Avenue, or if the driver of the Chevy Traverse fled there and stopped without a police pursuit.
Police stated there is no current danger to the public, late Tuesday night.
The Major Cases Assistance Team (MCAT) was assigned to the scene. Irving Park Road was closed in both directions between Judd Avenue and 25th Avenue. The large MCAT van was parked beginning around 8:30 p.m. Tuesday and later at Irving Park Road and Judd Avenue at the primary crime scene near the location of the shooting.
There was fluid leaking slowly from under the front, mid-center (possibly near the front passenger location) of the Nissan Sentra, more than four hours after the shooting.
Investigators were back at the scene during daylight on Wednesday, July 31, 2024.
