Lake County Sheriff’s Office Traffic Crash Investigators are investigating a serious crash that occurred Saturday morning in Newport Township.
Lake County Sheriff’s Deputies and Newport Township firefighters and paramedics responded about 10:15 a.m. Saturday, July 27, 2024 to a report of a crash with injuries on Russell Road and Frontage Road (east of I-94) in Newport Township. When Lake County Sheriff’s deputies and Newport Township firefighters and paramedics arrived, they located two vehicles with major damage, and immediately requested a second ambulance from Pleasant Prairie Fire & Rescue Department.
One of the victims of the crash was found lying off the road, down an embankment.
A passenger in a Mitsubishi Outlander, a 24-year-old woman of Schaumburg, sustained major injuries in the crash. She was transported to St. Catherine’s Medical Center in Pleasant Prairie with critical, life-threatening injuries. The driver of the Mitsubishi was transported to St. Catherine’s Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries.
Preliminary investigation shows a Chrysler 300, driven by a 21-year-old man of Zion, was traveling eastbound on Russell Road just west of Frontage Road. A Mitsubishi Outlander, driven by a 27-year-old man of Schaumburg, turned in front of the Chrysler, and quickly attempted to make a U-turn. The driver of the Chrysler struck the Mitsubishi’s passenger side, as the Mitsubishi’s driver attempted to make the U-turn.
The driver of the Chrysler was uninjured.
The crash remains under investigation by the Lake County Sheriff’s Office Technical Crash Investigations Team.
Russell Road is a two-lane highway with a left lane and a tollway exit ramp near the crash scene location. There is also a pedestrian bikeway/walkway along Russell Road south of Russell Road. The Speed Limit on Russell Road is 55 MPH according to Google Maps Street View images captured August 2023.
