Police, firefighters and paramedics from Prospect Heights responded about 2:57 p.m. Monday, July 8, 2024 to a report of a head-on crash with injuries near 1241 North Rand Road Prospect Heights — east of Olive Street and the south entrance to Prospect Crossing where Tonys Fresh Market is located.
Police, firefighters, and paramedics discovered a head-on crash involving two vehicles, and two other vehicles also crashed on Rand Road between Stratford Road and Forrest Avenue.
Three ambulances were assigned to the scene — a Prospect Heights Fire Protection District ambulance, a Wheeling Fire Department ambulance, and an Arlington Heights Fire Department ambulance. Arlington Heights and Wheeling paramedics were assigned by 3:02 p.m.
A witness at the scene said the scene was very chaotic, and that one woman was lying down near the crashed vehicles. A semi-trailer truck was also stopped at the scene, but apparently the truck and driver were not involved in the crash.
At least one of the crash victims was transported to Level 1 Trauma Center Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, by Wheeling Fire Department paramedics.
After the crash, a silver Honda Accord was facing northbound in the southbound lanes of Rand Road, and was crashed with a white Ford Edge that was facing southbound in the southbound lanes of Rand Road. Both vehicles were severely damage, and a front wheel from the Honda Accord was broken off and was located further north of the crash scene.
A white Ford Transit van, facing northbound, was crashed east of the Ford Edge and Honda Accord. A white Porsche SUV was re-located in a parking lot north of the crash scene with moderate to severe front end damage. The male driver of the Porsche SUV was not transported by paramedics, and remained at the scene.
Some MCAT-STAR investigators were on the scene, and an Arlington Heights Police Department aerial drone was used to gather evidence images at the scene. Initially it was unknown if a full MCAT-STAR team response was assigned.
An extended crash investigation continue until about 7:30 p.m. Monday night, and Rand Road was re-opened shortly after 7:30 p.m. Rand Road had been closed in both directions between Waterman Avenue and Olive Street.
The Speed Limit on Rand Road is 45 MPH at the crash scene east of Olive Street. The Speed Limit is 35 MPH on Rand Road west of Olive Street, according to Google Maps Street View images captured August 2019.
Arlington Heights Police Department assisted with the aerial drone, and with traffic control.
