Police, firefighters and paramedics from Arlington Heights responded about 3:13 a.m. Sunday, June 23, 2024 to a report of a house fire in the block of 400 North Dryden Place in Arlington Heights.

There were no reported injuries, and the resident was not home when the fire occurred.

A passerby called 9-1-1 reporting fire showing from the roof of the house located on the west side of Dryden Place between St James Street and Euclid Avenue in Arlington Heights.

Firefighters from Engine 2 on arrival reported fire showing from the roof and back of the house. Early in operations, firefighters reported the hazard of a power line down in the backyard.

Based on the 9-1-1 call, firefighters from Mount Prospect Tower Ladder 13 and Prospect Heights Squad 9 were assigned to the scene, along with Arlington Heights Engine 2, Ambulance 2, Ambulance 1, Tower Ladder 1, Squad 2, Engine 4, and Battalion 1.

The incident was upgraded to a Working Fire response which assigned a Prospect Heights Battalion Chief and a Buffalo Grove Tower Ladder to the scene.

A Palatine ambulance and fire engine, and a Schaumburg ambulance were assigned to stand by in Arlington Heights fire stations.

Firefighters fought an interior attack with significant fire over their heads in the ceiling and roof of the home. The fire was significantly knocked down by about 4:25 a.m. when Engine 2’s crew announced they were working on extinguishing hot spots.

The trailing edge of thunderstorms was over Arlington Heights at about 1:30 a.m. Loud thunder was heard as late as about 12:30 a.m. Sunday.

There was no official release from the fire department Sunday morning, and therefore there was no official indication of the cause of the fire. The fire scene was immediately under investigation.

Possibly, a falling branch from thunderstorm conditions hit the power line feed to the house, and caused arcing near the roof. With nobody home to detect the arcing and early fire, it is possible the fire extended significantly to the roof structure of the one-story home. This statement has not been confirmed by fire officials.

A neighbor told CARDINAL NEWS that he heard a popping noise about one hour before he noticed the firefighters arriving at the scene. He hadn’t investigated the noise because he thought it might have been firecrackers.

The information in this article is an early report published before any summary information was confirmed or released by police or fire authorities. As of 10:15 a.m. the Village of Arlington Heights did not release any details about the house fire. At about 4:16 a.m., the police department using social media asked residents to avoid the area of Dryden between Euclid Avenue and Miner Street due to an active scene. At 5:54 a.m. the police department announced that Dryden was re-opened.
