Lake County Sheriff’s deputies and firefighters and paramedics from Lake Bluff Fire Department responded about 5:20 p.m. Sunday, April 28, 2024 to a report of a house fire in the block of 1700 Shore Acres Drive, located on the Lake Michigan lakefront in unincorporated Lake Bluff.
Homeowners arrived home to find smoke in the house from a fire in the basement of the large house. No flames were seen, but two dogs were still in the house when firefighters arrived.
Fire command on arrival reported smoke showing from the large 2-story single-family home, and residents standing outside. A “confirmed fire response” was activated by 5:27 p.m.
The two dogs, possibly hampered from escaping on their own from old age, were removed and treated by firefighters. The dogs unfortunately died.
One firefighter suffered minor burns.
The neighborhood does not have fire hydrants, and tender or tanker truck crews were assigned to bring water to portable tanks at the scene.
Firefighters, paramedics and/or command officers from Beach Park, Countryside, Deerfield-Bannockburn, Grayslake, Great Lakes Naval Station, Lake Forest, Libertyville, Newport Township, North Chicago, and Northfield were assigned to assist Lake Bluff Fire Department firefighters.
The cause of the fire is under investigation by Lake Bluff Fire Department, and a Mutual Aid Box Alarm System (MABAS) Box Alarm #45-02 was also activated for mutual aid fire investigators.
There was significant damage to basement, and smoke damage throughout the house, which was uninhabitable after the fire.
The Shoreacres neighborhood is located just south of Great Lakes Naval Station on the north side of Lake Bluff near the private golf club with the same name — Shoreacres. According to Golf Digest, the private golf club is listed as one of the 100 greatest golf courses in the United States, including a “fantastic topography” with plateaus and ravines that feed into Lake Michigan.
