A Chicago police officer was fatally shot in the Gage Park neighborhood on Chicago’s southwest side (8th Police District) overnight during the early morning hours of Sunday, April 21, 2024 after returning home from work.
The shooting reportedly occurred near 55th Street and Kedzie Avenue early Sunday morning, but the precise address and the precise time were not initially released by the Chicago Police Department. Witnesses in the area report that the police response occurred was at about 3:00 a.m.
The male police officer was shot multiple times and was transported to the Level 1 Trauma Center University of Chicago Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.
Police say the police officer’s vehicle was stolen during the murder. Initially police have not confirmed whether the crime was a random carjacking or a targeted murder of the police officer.
Chicago Police Department Supt. Larry Snelling confirmed the Chicago police officer was in uniform at the time of the shooting, but was off duty. The police officer was wearing clothing over his uniform.
CPD Supt. Larry Snelling said during an update around 9:00 Sunday, April 21, 2024 the 30-year-old male officer was shot and killed just two days before his 31st birthday, and that he had been working for the Chicago Police Department for six years. The media update was provided at the northwest corner of 57th Street and Cottage Grove, near the University of Chicago Hospital. ShotSpotter also detected the shooting at 5501 South Kedzie.
