A Lake County Sheriff’s Deputy assisting at a traffic stop was nearly struck by a passing car Sunday evening. On April 14, 2024, at approximately 8:30 p.m., a Lake County Sheriff’s Deputy conducted a traffic stop on Route 12 near Long Grove Road in Deer Park, because the vehicle’s registration was suspended. A second deputy arrived to assist. Both deputies had all the emergency lights on their squad cars activated. As the backup deputy exited his squad car, a southbound Hyundai sedan, driven by an 80-year-old man of Park Ridge, struck the deputy’s door, nearly striking the deputy.
Fortunately, neither the driver, nor the deputy, were injured in the crash.
The driver of the Hyundai was cited for violating ‘Scott’s Law.’
All drivers should be aware of ‘Scott’s Law,’ named after Chicago Fire Lieutenant Scott Gillen, who was struck and killed, while he was on the scene of a traffic crash. ‘Scott’s Law’ requires all drivers to change lanes and, if unable, greatly reduce the vehicle’s speed when approaching an emergency vehicle or utility vehicle with flashing lights activated.
