Arlington Heights Police Department charged an individual with multiple offenses following unprovoked acts of violence against motorists on Saturday, November 18, 2023 at approximately 7:06 a.m.

Arlington Heights Police Officers responded to several 911 calls from the area of 2400 South Arlington Heights Road in Arlington Heights. Witnesses at this location reported the offender, later identified as Jeremiah Butler, drove his vehicle into oncoming traffic, intentionally striking another vehicle. Butler then entered the vehicle he struck, and physically attacked the driver. Following multiple attempts to resist Butler’s attack, the driver managed to escape into a passing vehicle which stopped to offer assistance. Additional motorists stopped upon seeing this disturbance, rendered aid, and defended victims from Butler’s violent attacks. Butler was observed attempting to pull a motorist from their vehicle but that victim escaped and managed to drive away.

Another motorist who stopped to offer their assistance was also attacked by Butler. He strangled this female victim with both hands until she briefly lost consciousness, only to release his grip once additional motorists intervened. Reacting to initial police officers arriving at the scene, Butler stole this victim’s vehicle and fled the area.

Arlington Heights Fire Department firefighters and paramedics were dispatched to the scene at 2400 South Arlington Heights Road, and provided treatment to the multiple crime victims. Two female victims were transported to Northwest Community Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

According to the Arlington Heights Police Department, Butler’s subsequent direction of travel was monitored by responding officers who were able to take him into custody shortly thereafter in the Scarsdale neighborhood near Park Street and Mayfair Road. Witness reported the victim’s vehicle (driven by Butler) was traveling northbound on Arlington Heights Road at speeds possibly up to 90 to 100 MPH. Butler resisted arrest in Scarsdale, and was taken down to the ground by multiple police officer according to a neighbor in Scarsdale.

Jeremiah Butler was transported to Northwest Community Hospital for evaluation, and was taken into police custody when he was released from the hospital.

Also at the scene at Park Street and Mayfair Road, police transported the victim to her vehicle that had been stolen — now parked on Mayfair Road just south of Park Street, where she reported being injured. Next, another ambulance was dispatched to Mayfair Road and Park Street for the battered victim. She reported she was suffering from injuries from being battered at the scene of the incident on south Arlington Heights Road. The victim was also transported to Northwest Community Hospital by Arlington Height Fire Department paramedics.
