Round Lake Beach police officers responded about 4:15 p.m. Wednesday, October 18, 2023 to a report of a domestic home invasion in the block of 100 Beach View Drive in Round Lake Beach. The caller stated a male subject was attempting to gain entry into the home. Police were also told that the person trying to gain access into the home had been involved in a terminated relationship with the person living inside the home. The male subject subsequently left the property in a 2010 Nissan passenger car after police were called.
As police were responding to the location of the home invasion, a police officer spotted the 2010 Nissan. The home invasion suspect was fleeing westbound on Rollins Road. Police officers activated the police squad’s emergency lights to attempt to get the driver of the Nissan to stop, but the vehicle driver sped away at a high rate of speed. According to Round Lake Beach Police Department, the police officers decided to stop the pursuit to avoid any potential safety issues with the amount of traffic on Rollins Road in Round Lake Beach.
The driver of the Nissan kept driving at a high rate of speed on Rollins Road when the Nissan left the roadway near Lotus drive and slammed into two parked vehicles that were displayed on sale in the block of 800 West Rollins Road. Simultaneously, a 55-year-old male was standing outside of his own vehicle, looking at the parked display vehicles. When the Nissan hit the parked vehicles, one of the parked vehicles spun into the pedestrian. The force of the crash shoved the bystander into the roadway, causing injuries.
Firefighters and paramedics from the Greater Round Lake Fire Protection District were dispatched to Rollins Road and Turnbull Drive in Round Lake Beach, and moved up to the crash scene to assess and treat the crash victims. Simultaneously, other firefighters and paramedics from the Greater Round Lake Fire Protection District were assigned to a police-involved shooting where a male armed with a meat cleaver was shot by a Lake County Sheriff’s Deputy.
The driver of the Nissan passenger car, initially unidentified, was unresponsive after the crash and was trapped in the car. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The 55-year-old pedestrian injured in the secondary vehicle crash was transported to an area hospital by the Greater Round Area Fire Protection District paramedics. His condition was initially unknown.
The crash is under investigation by the Round Lake Beach Police Department and the Lake County Major Assistance Team (MCAT).
