Lake County Sheriff’s Traffic Crash Investigators investigated at the scene after a deadly Saturday morning crash involving a dump truck and a pickup truck, and are continuing the investigation of collected data. An Illinois State Police trooper was also investigating at the scene into the late afternoon for the crash involving a commercial truck.
Lake County Sheriff’s Deputies and Libertyville firefighters and paramedics responded about 9:20 a.m. Saturday, September 30, 2023 to a report of a serious crash with injuries at Route 43 and Muir Avenue in unincorporated Lake Bluff. Lake County Sheriff’s deputies arrived and found a 2004 Mack semi truck, hauling a trailer loaded with dirt and clay was involved in a crash with a 2010 Toyota Tacoma.
Fire crews from Libertyville discovered one person trapped in the pickup truck; and due to the extent of the damage to the pickup truck with the entrapment, additional fire crews were requested from Lake Forest, Lake Bluff, and North Chicago.
The driver of the Toyota sustained major injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene. The driver of the Mack did not initially report any injuries. The 2010 Toyota Tacoma was driven by a 36-year-old man of Wadsworth. The Mack semi truck was driven by a 21-year-old man of Round Lake Beach.
Preliminary investigation indicates the driver of the Toyota Tacoma pickup truck was traveling southbound on Route 43, and the driver of the Mack truck was traveling northbound on Route 43. For an unknown reason, the driver of the Toyota drifted into the northbound lanes of traffic, according to the Lake County Sheriff’s Office. The driver of the Mack was unable to avoid the collision and struck the Toyota head-on. Both vehicles rolled following the collision.
The Lake County Coroner’s Office responded to the scene and an autopsy is being scheduled.
The crash remains under investigation by the Lake County Sheriff’s Office Technical Crash Investigations Team.
The crash scene at Muir Avenue was north of the intersection with Foster Avenue, which has a traffic signal. The intersection of Waukegan Road and Muir Avenue is oblique. Waukegan Road is a four-lane highway which narrows slightly approaching Muir Avenue from the south because of the end of a painted median and left turn lane near Foster Avenue. There is a crosswalk and a sidewalk at the curb on the east side of Waukegan Road. North of Muir Avenue, there is a widening of Waukegan Road associated with a left turn lane which narrows approaching Muir Avenue from the north. The Speed Limit on Waukegan Road is 35 MPH, according to Google Maps Street View images captured September 2019.
