Police, firefighters and paramedics from Des Plaines responded about 1:04 p.m. Wednesday, August 16, 2023 to a report that a landscaper was hit by a work van in the northbound lane of Mount Prospect Road, south of Milburn Avenue, and near the border of Des Plaines and Mount Prospect. The stretch of Mount Prospect Road is located between Northwest Highway and Central Road.
Upon arrival of police, firefighters and paramedics, the pedestrian was down on the street. The landscaping worker was transported by paramedics to an undisclosed hospital.
Apparently, the landscaper stepped off a rear ramp on an enclosed trailer into traffic, and was hit by the white work van.
A female adult driver was traveling northbound on Mount Prospect Road when the pedestrian was hit. The Speed Limit on Mount Prospect Road is 30 MPH, according to Google Map Street View images. The landscaping truck and trailer were parked in a parking area along the northbound curb, facing northbound, when the crash occurred. The victim was apparently hit near the back of the trailer on the driver’s side.
Two neighbors at the scene said that they heard that today was the landscaping worker’s first day on the job. They said he appeared to be badly injured. However, according to the extent of the on-scene investigation, the worker’s injuries did not appear to be life-threatening. The Major Case Assistance Team – Serious Traffic Accident Reconstruction (MCAT-STAR) team was not assigned to the scene.
A fire engine crew was assigned to the scene to wash down the street after Des Plaines police completed the on-scene investigation.
Initially both northbound and southbound lanes were shut down between Lincoln Street and Milburn Avenue. The northbound lane was opened at around 2:00 p.m.
