A record 15 inches of snow fell from the late evening of May 1, 2013 to the early morning of May 2, 2013. Snowfall rates were actually measured here and were consistently 2.5″/hour for several hours. A couple boxes were placed in the grass before the storm. The taller box on the right is 8 inches tall and can be used for reference. This snow caused a lot of tree damage and power outages. The May snowfall is very rare and most likely an all-time record snowfall for the month of May in Minnesota.
The winter storm system dropped about 18 inches of snow across parts of northwest Wisconsin and more than 15 inches in southern Minnesota, according to the National Weather Service. The snow was very wet, heavy snow.
Snow records were also set in Iowa at about 11 inches.
Video showing pine tree split in half by weight of snow. More than 26,000 Xcel Energy customers were without power Thursday after a heavy snow weighed down trees and lines in southern Minnesota and western Wisconsin. In Owatonna, Minn., the city was buried under more than a foot of snow.
