Elgin Police responded to an activated burglary alarm about 2:42 a.m. Saturday at the Sam’s Club, 1000 South Randall Road. Police arrived in two minutes and reported two males getting into a silver Chevrolet pickup truck. One police officer attempted arrest one of the males while the offender was entering the pickup truck, but the vehicle started moving and the officer was pushed aside. The second police officer and an Elgin Police Department squad car where then hit by the offenders’ pickup truck.
Backup officers responded and began the pursuit at Muirhead Road. After doubling back on Muirhead, the offenders entered eastbound the Elgin-O’Hare Expressway and proceeded to eastbound I-290, the eastbound Kennedy Expressway and then northbound Edens Expressway at speeds of 80-90 mph. The pursuit crossed the Wisconsin-Illinois State Line and when the offenders attempted to exit at Durand Avenue in Racine County, six Wisconsin State Highway Patrol cars were blocking the end of the ramp, and the suspects were apprehended.
Police discovered about 254 car batteries in the back of the pickup truck. The ramp was closed past 5:00 a.m. with the damaged pickup truck and at least one police squad car with two flat rear tires.
